It is with great sadness that the Hulett daughters announce the passing of their mother, Frankie Gayle Mock Hulett. Frankie passed away April 17th at Greenfield Assisted Living. She was 81 years old.
Frankie was the first born daughter of Harvey Louis Mock and Irene Mae Liles Mock. The Mock family resided in the small town of DeRidder, LA which is located in the western part of the state. The small-town southern culture that focused on family and faith marked Frankie indelibly. She was a lady, gently charming, and always gracious. It was these characteristics that attracted young Lester Hulett Jr. (and it didn't hurt that she was quite the looker!). Frankie and Lester fell in love and cemented their love in marriage in 1955.
Frankie, Lester and their young daughter, Lisa, moved to Oak Ridge in 1960 when Lester accepted a job with Oak Ridge National Laboratory. During their first few years as new "Oak Ridgers" the Hulett family resided in the Garden Apartments as did so many other new arrivals to the town. Apartment living helped cultivate new friendships. Frankie and Lester enjoyed many clubs that were being formed by these energetic new-comers; for instance Dinner Clubs were quite popular as was the Baby Sitter Club, which came in handy when second daughter, Valerie, joined the family.
In 1967, Frankie and Lester built a beautiful home that was nestled into the ridge on the west side of Oak Ridge. With the help of an architect, they designed a unique, attractive house that took advantage of the breathtaking view of the Cumberland Mountains. In time, Frankie decorated the home to reflect her warm, eclectic personality - deep, rich purple in some rooms, warm, comfortable green in others and every room featured unique art work that invited visitors to sit back and reflect. The Hulett's enjoyed sharing their home with others. Frankie graciously welcomed all visitors, was quick to offer refreshments and made certain that every beverage served was accompanied with a napkin. Many a delightful evening was spent on the deck in the company of dear friends and neighbors.
Frankie was a stay at home mom until her youngest entered school. Beginning the early 70's, Frankie began to explore the working world with employment positions in banks, credit unions and even a stock brokerage. For a time she was co-owner of a local business, The Book Store. However, Frankie found her true identity when she joined the staff of Roane State Community College. At first, she managed the book store for the college. Later she was transferred to the favorite position of her working career - administrative assistant to the coordinator of the Oak Ridge Campus. Frankie was ideal in this position. Not only was she an effective, efficient secretary but she was warm and receptive to all. Colleagues would stop by the office simple because they needed a smile and Frankie was always happy to oblige. She enjoyed many long term friendships with coworkers that would endure her entire life.
Frankie and Lester both retired in the late 1990's. Finally, with some free time on her hands, Frankie took the opportunity to volunteer with the Knoxville Opera Guild. It was during this time that many, new friendships were forged. Frankie was honored to hold several leadership positions with the Guild, culminating in the Guild Presidency for 2006 - 2007.
But, as with us all, aging took its toll on both Frankie and Lester. Lester's life ended in March of 2016. Devastated, Frankie's health declined and she slipped quietly from this life in the late evening hours of April 17th, 2017.
Frankie is survived by her daughter Lisa McMichael (and husband Larry), Valerie Herd (and husband Jeff), granddaughters Heather Rule and Andrea Herd. She is also survived by sister Milbre Mock Howard (and husband Don), sister Donna Mock Pittman (and husband Joe) as well as nephews, Kevin Howard (and wife Pam), Vaughn Howard (and wife Josie), Danny Strange (and wife Diana) Richard Strange (and wife Violet), and niece Kayla Strange Knowles, and many great nieces and nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 13th from 11am – 12pm at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church, 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge. A Celebration of Life will begin at noon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Knoxville Opera Guild, 612 E. Depot Avenue, Knoxville, TN 37917; Oak Ridge Animal Shelter, 395 Belgrade Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830 or the Roane State Foundation in Frankie's memory, 276 Patton Lane, Harriman, TN 37748..
The Family would like to thank Greenfield Assisted Living for their attentive care of Frankie in the last year of her life.
Frankie graced our lives. We will miss her.
