Mary Whatley Gable, 94, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at the Courtyards.
She was born November 18, 1922 in Hanceville, Alabama, the daughter of Walter and Allie Whatley.
Mary was a long-time resident of Oak Ridge, moving from Cullman, Alabama in 1951.
She was an active member of Central Baptist Church and always looked forward to Sunday Services. She was a devoted mother who always put her husband and children before herself. Her cooking skills were legendary – every homecoming meal was memorable when the family gathered. She was also an accomplished seamstress, making over a dozen wedding dresses and formal gowns for family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Toney Gable in July 2016, and by siblings Alene Jackson, Melba Williams, Wayne Whatley and Ray Whatley.
Mary is survived by daughter, Barbara Arrington and husband Gene of Knoxville; and son Ron and his wife, Pamela of Greensboro, Georgia. She is also survived by three grandchildren: Toney Darrell Arrington of Knoxville, Lauren Gable Blair and Meredith Gable Curtis, both of Nashville; and three great-grandchildren, Frank Williamson Blair V, Davis Gable Blair and Elizabeth Hensley Blair.
A special thank you to the staff of the Courtyard and to Amedisys Hospice for their wonderful care.
Family and friends will meet for a graveside service on Friday, April 14, 2017 at 11am at Oak Ridge Memorial Park with the Rev. Glenn Ellis officiating.
The family asks that any memorials be made in her name to Central Baptist Church, 130 Providence Road, Oak Ridge, TN 37830, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
