Bernice Vinsant Stephens, 91, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2017, at Cornerstone Village South in Johnson City, TN.
Bernice was a native of Campbell County, TN and the daughter of the late Oda B. Vinsant and Tilia Grissom Vinsant of Jacksboro.
She was preceded in death by the love of her life and husband of 68 years, Jay O. Stephens. Jay O. and Bernice made their home in Oak Ridge, TN, where they were very active members of their church and community until Jay's passing in 2015. Also preceding her in death were her brothers, Floyd Vinsant and Ernest Vinsant, and her twin sister, Beatrice V. Seiber.
Bernice is survived by her son, Jay Vincent Stephens (Wanda), Oak Ridge; daughter, Donna Ruth Stephens Wilkinson (Steve), Johnson City; daughter, Betsy Lynne Stephens Byrne (Charles), Johnson City; nine grandchildren: Shane Vinsant Byrne (Alex), Lexington, KY; Bradley Jay Stephens, Oak Ridge; Rhett Nichols Byrne (Abby), Johnson City; Angela Rose Stephens, Speedwell, TN; Kimberly Nicole Stephens Wood (Ben), Springdale, AR; Tara Lynne Byrne Findlay (Jordan), Johnson City; Thomas Frederick Wilkinson (Elizabeth), Bend, OR; Charles Caddell Byrne, Louisville, KY; Jay Stephen Wilkinson, Nashville; four great-grandchildren: Benjamin Byrne and Holden Byrne, Johnson City; and Maris Byrne and Grady Byrne, Lexington, KY.
Bernice was a graduate of Jacksboro High School, Hiwassee College, and the University of Tennessee. She was an elementary school teacher in the Oak Ridge School System for 25 years, teaching at Linden and Glenwood Elementary Schools. Prior to teaching in Oak Ridge, she taught in the Loudon County School System and was employed at United States Atomic Energy Commission for 14 years.
She was a very active member of Robertsville Baptist Church. She particularly enjoyed working with children in the church's outreach program, teaching children's Sunday School classes, singing in the Chancel Choir, supporting missionaries, and traveling with her church family.
Bernice's generous and loving Christian spirit was on display throughout her life...to her family, students, church, and community members. She was a wonderful example for all who knew her as a true woman of faith.
