Vivian passed from this life into eternal glory on Sunday, March 19, 2017 at the age of 81 years after suffering a devastating brain aneurysm. Born in Elizabethton, she remained a lifetime resident of Oliver Springs and the surrounding area, and was sole proprietor of Weddings by Vivian in Oak Ridge for close to 28 years. She is survived by her adoring husband of almost 50 years, Jack Schermerhorn originally from Boulder, Colorado; a sister JoAnn McKinney Ogle and husband Larry of Clinton; Sons Anthony Benitez and wife Sandra of San Marcos, Texas; and Kenneth Benitez and wife Dani of Dover, Delaware. Vivian was preceded in death by a daughter, Lydia Elizabeth Williams; Sister Barbara McKinney-Porch, and Parents Raymond and Inez McKinney all from the Oak Ridge area.
Vivian had eight adoring grandchildren – Melissa Benitez-Cody and Significant Andrew Church of New Braunfels, Texas; Jeffrey Hahn and wife Misty of Spring Branch Texas; Cynthia Kinnear and husband Edward of Bergheim, Texas; Michael Benitez and wife Racheal of San Marcos, Texas; Jessica Pfeiffer and husband Jason of Dover, Delaware; Amber Benitez of Dallas, Texas; Joanna Williams of Oak Ridge and Allison Williams of Cookeville, Tennessee. Vivian was also greatly blessed with 17 great-grandchildren and a host of nephews, nieces and friends whom she loved and enjoyed - keeping up with them both in person and on Social Media, with a special mention to her most trusted friend, Annette Udelhofen of Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
Vivian married in August of 1967 and became an officer's wife, travelling to Ohio and Biloxi, Mississippi until Jack's military retirement in 1978 and federal service retirement in 1990. In 1985, she opened a small wedding shop in Oliver Springs and through dedication and effort, then opened a storefront in Oak Ridge, offering her customers good value, personal service, and lots of cordial conversation as testified by multiple awards including Jim's Formal Wear and Best Bridal Store by the Oak Ridger. Her shop was a lifelong dream come true, and she continued until health and age brought a final closing to live a quiet life with her best friend and lifelong love, Jack, and her German Shepherd, Zoe in Oliver Springs. She was a member of Royce Baptist Church, attending when health permitted.
Vivian was a vibrant woman, dedicated to God, her husband, family, and lifelong friends who will miss her and that infectious smile, those raised eyebrows, and Irish wit and humor. She will be truly missed.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, March 22, 2017 from 6 – 8pm at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will follow at 8pm with Elder Anthony Benitez and Rev. Mike Harbin officiating. Family and friends will meet on Thursday at 2pm at Oak Ridge Memorial Park for a graveside service. The family asks that any memorials be made in her memory to Royce Baptist Church of Oak Ridge, The American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
