Carlos E. Bamberger died peacefully on December 28, 2016, four weeks after a serious fall from which he never regained consciousness. He was born in Offenbach am Main, Germany to Hermann and Thea Wolf Bamberger on March 26, 1933, as Karl-Heinz Bamberger, and in 1937 emigrated with his mother to Argentina where his father had sought refuge in 1936. In Argentina, his name was translated to Carlos Enrique. Carlos did all his schooling in Buenos Aires: primary, secondary at Escuela Industrial #3 where he graduated with the degree of Chemical Technician, and Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires where he graduated with the degree of Doctor in Chemistry in 1959. Carlos married fellow chemistry graduate Elena R. Gidekel in 1959. Son Gustavo E. was born in 1960, daughter S. Karen in 1962 and son Roberto H. in 1965. Carlos worked at Firestone Argentina as a Chemical Technician from 1952 to 1957, and at the National Atomic Energy Commission (CNEA) from 1957 to 1961 doing research on beryllium chemistry. In 1961, he came to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory with an IAEA fellowship to do further research on beryllium chemistry and returned to Buenos Aires in 1963, where he continued at CNEA until 1966. That year he came with his family to the United States, and was employed at ORNL until his retirement as a senior research staff member in 1997. He coauthored over 20 Patents, 3 book chapters and over 100 technical papers. Carlos enjoyed traveling throughout the world with Elena, and recording their travels on video. Many were shown on local channel 12 Community TV of Oak Ridge. Their travels included over fifty countries, with destinations on every continent other than Antarctica. Carlos is survived by Elena, his beloved wife of 57 years; their three children Gustavo (Martha Van Haitsma), Karen (Kent Meyer), and Roberto (Suzanne Bamberger); and their five grandchildren Aaron Bamberger (Rachel Agner), Nathan Bamberger, Jeremy Bamberger Meyer, Ada Bamberger Meyer, and Sophia Bamberger. Please join us on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at Weatherford Mortuary where the family will receive friends from 1 – 2pm and the memorial service celebrating a life well-lived, well-travelled and well-loved in honor of Carlos will begin at 2pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in Carlos's name to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
