The Greatest of the Greatest Generation
Earl Thomas Taylor of Oak Ridge passed away on March 11, 2017 at age 93 at Courtyards of Oak Ridge after a loving visit from each of his family members.
Earl was born to parents Earl Elbert and Lena Mary (Midkiff) Taylor in Ronceverte, West Virginia on August 15, 1923. He bravely answered his country's call of patriotic duty and served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Earl met his future bride, Edith Livesay, while home on leave from the war and was immediately captivated by the beautiful green-eyed nursing student. The two eloped on November 11, 1944 and remained lovingly married for the next 72 years.
After moving to Oak Ridge in 1950, Earl worked as a machinist for decades until retiring from the Y-12 National Security Complex.
Earl was an active member of the Kern Memorial United Methodist Church. After his retirement, he traveled extensively to nearly every state in the United States and parts of Canada. He enjoyed model trains, country music, and bird-watching. A kind and caring man, he never met a stranger.
He was preceded in death by his wife Edith Caroline Taylor and his brother Fred Taylor. His surviving family members include: Sister Sue Cook of Ronceverte, WV; Daughters Lynn Hayes of Nashville, TN, Lana Zuker and husband Ron of Knoxville, and Lisa Taylor of Decatur, Georgia; Grandchildren Nichole Lillibridge, Clark Zuker, Britney Hayes, and Stephanie Garner and husband Brendan; Great-grandchildren Abby, Taylor Kate, Kayla, and Ava.
The family will receive friends at Kern Memorial United Methodist Church on Saturday March 18, 2017 starting at 12:30 pm, followed by the funeral service at 1:30 pm. Reverend Don Morris will officiate. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. An online guest book may be signed at weatherfordmortuary.com.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Kern Memorial Church, 451 E. Tennessee Avenue, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

On behalf of both Earl and Edith, the family would like to thank the staff at Courtyards Senior Living, the caregivers from Homewatch, members of Kern Memorial United Methodist church, thoughtful neighbors, and special friend Matt Murphy for the compassion, care, and friendships they provided to Earl and Edith.
