Lucille Gertrude Elkins Fortner, 78, of Oak Ridge passed away Monday, March 6, 2017 at the Methodist Medical Center surrounded by her children.
She was born November 27, 1938 in Lake City, TN, one of four children born to Luther and Lillian Hutson Elkins.
She was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church.
Mrs. Fortner was an avid gardener of vegetables and flowers.
The Christmas season was always very special to her and she enjoyed decorating her house inside and out. Her house was often featured in articles in the Oak Ridger. She was a "people" person and enjoyed spending time with family and friends, never meeting a stranger. Along with her five children, she raised many more, as her house was often the center of activities.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Nathan Fortner; and her brothers, Grover and Billy Elkins and sister, Jean Hamm.
She is survived by children, Deborah Wilson of Oak Ridge, Wayne Fortner of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, Sandra Vaughn and husband Alan of Clinton, Linda White and husband Randall of Clinton and Michelle Selvey and husband Jeff of Oak Ridge; 8 grandchildren, Carmen Suits and husband Mike, Jeffrey Barger and wife Beverly, Candace Gallaher, Blake White and wife Samantha, Corey Fortner, Brooke Tant and husband Kyle, Cody Fortner and Nathan Vaughn and 7 great-grandchildren, Natalee Barger, Kaleb Suits, Logan Suits, Carleigh White, Haileigh White, Ryder Gallaher and Kenzleigh White.
In keeping with her wishes, she was cremated and no services will be held.
