Wife, Mother, Teacher, Artist, Volunteer, Angel on Earth

Mary R. Henderson, 85, of Oak Ridge died peacefully on March 3, 2017 at U.T. Medical Center.
Mary and Martha, twin daughters of Hugh and Edweina Hall were born October 15, 1931 in Gadsden, AL.
Mrs. Henderson is survived by her daughters; Joy Henderson and Emily Newell of Oak Ridge; son Alan and wife Kathy Henderson of Knoxville; grandchildren, Jonathan Lesher of Cumberland, MD and Mary "Jackie" Newell of Pickens, SC; and great granddaughter, Neha Newell. The extended family includes brother Jerry (Nancy) Hall of Gadsden, AL, twin, Martha Turner of Cummings, GA, sister-in-law Shirley Langley of Oxford, AL and numerous nieces, nephews and their children.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Donald A. Henderson Sr.; son, Donnie Henderson Jr., and brother, Hugh A. Hall.
She and Donald married December 25, 1950 in Gadsden. During her husband's enlistment with the USAF, they lived in eight states, on Guam and their last years in Rantoul, IL. After twenty years in the military, they moved to Oak Ridge in 1970.
Mary retired in 1995 from First United Methodist Church where she was a nursery school teacher for 25 years. She enjoyed reading and was active with book groups at Oak Ridge Library. Mary was very active at the Kern Memorial Methodist Church in Oak Ridge, TN especially with the Sunday School Group. Mary and Donald enjoyed the Grand Squares Club of Square Dancers of Knoxville. Mary volunteered at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge starting in 1989 and rarely missed a Friday of volunteering.
She was a life-time artist and enthusiast, especially with her twin sister, Martha. Mary took art classes and graduated with an Art Degree in 1988 from Roane State Community College. She had numerous exhibitions and sold much of her artwork.
One of her great passions was traveling. She visited all 50 states and many foreign countries including Australia, Japan, Philippines and Europe. The family took extensive family driving trips during the 1960's all over the U.S. Mary enjoyed travelling with Donald, sister Martha and her husband James Turner and brother Jerry and his wife Nancy Hall. Mary and Donald spent one summer working for the Yellowstone National Park just for fun.

The family will receive family and friends Saturday, March 11, 2017 from 12–2pm at Kern Memorial Methodist Church. The funeral will begin at 2pm with Rev. Don Morris and Karen Spearman, Congregational Care Minister, officiating. Interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park.
