George Alexander Holt passed away following a sudden illness on 2/5/2017 in a local hospital. He was 97 years old. He was preceded in death by Adelaide Walrath Holt in 2000, his wife of 60 years. He was also preceded in death by his son, Charles Albert Holt in 2002. Surviving relatives include his oldest son, George Alexander Holt, Jr, and his wife Wendy, of Old Greenwich CT and Chatham MA, his daughter Carol Adelaide Woody, of Harrison, TN, his grandchildren, Katharine Holt Campbell and her husband Patrick, of Norwell MA, George Alexander Holt, III, and his wife Wendy, of Hartsdale NY, and Timothy Dongan Holt and his wife Lisa, of Boxborough MA. He also has 7 great grandchildren, Emily, Charlotte and Benjamin, Katharine's children, Matthew and Justin, George's children, and Aidan and Liam, Timothy's children. He was really hoping to live long enough to have some great -great grandchildren.

George was born in Memphis TN. He graduated from The University of Tennessee in 1941 with a B.S. In Electrical Engineering. After a short time at Fort Monmouth NJ, he returned to Tennessee where he became an employee of Y-12, then ORNL where he was employed for 38 years, serving as an engineering manager for most of those years. He was a charter member of the congregation of St Stephens Episcopal Church. He was active in Boy Scouting in the area. He was appointed as a Kentucky Colonel by Governor Wendell Ford and a Tennessee Colonel by Governor Winfield Dunn.

George was well known in east Tennessee for his involvement in Blue Lodge Masons, and had earned the prestigious title of becoming a 33° Scottish Rite Mason. He was also a member of the York Rite Masons. He was a Past Potentate of Kerbela Shrine in 1974, was known as "Lil' George", a member of Kerbela Klown Korps, staying active as a clown up until 2014, participating in Kerbela's annual Shrine Circus. He was a past president of the South East Shrine Clown Association in 1968-1969. He has been honored by many local Masonic Lodges, being nominated as an honorary member. He spent many of his last years visiting rural Masonic Lodges, sharing his knowledge of the so-called secret rites of the organization. He was also named an honorary member of Kerbela Shrine Temple's Motor Corps after he doubled on the rear seat of a Shrine unit motorcycle riding from west Knoxville to Pigeon Forge for a Potentate's Ball in his 90s to honor the newly elected Potentate.

Please join family and friends for the Memorial Service celebrating his long, rich life. The service will be held 3/11/2017 at 1: 30p at St Stephens Episcopal Church in Oak Ridge TN. Following the deposition of his ashes in the Memorial Garden on the church property, the family looks forward to hearing stories of his active life at a reception in the fellowship hall and sharing our memories of him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to St Stephens Episcopal Church or to Shriners Hospitals.
