Reba Justice Holmberg, 94, a lifelong resident of the Oak Ridge area, passed away Saturday, Feb 18, 2017 in Oak Ridge.
She was born in 1923 to the late Andy and Lula (Jett) Justice in Robertsville, TN one of the rural communities later absorbed by the World War II Manhattan Project. Along with her late sister, Pansy, she grew up among a tight knit and loving extended family along Robertsville Road; people who descended from the earliest pioneer settlers of Anderson, Roane and Morgan counties. She attended Robertsville school, graduating from high school there in 1940. Three years later she received a BS Degree from the University of Tennessee.
Upon college graduation in 1943, she came home to an unrecognizable community transformed by the building of Oak Ridge. Her parents' and grandparents' farms were condemned for the Manhattan Project and they moved to a new farm in Oliver Springs. Reba was hired to work as a Junior Chemist at Y-12 and was delighted to find herself surrounded by thousands of other young people, scientists and GIs. She met and in 1950 married one of those transplanted young scientists, Bob Holmberg of Fort Dodge, Iowa. They held their wedding at Chapel-on-the-Hill and like many others who came to Oak Ridge in those years, they stayed and raised their children here.
Reba worked as a teacher's aide at Linden School in Oak Ridge and volunteered with the Anderson County Literacy Program. She and her husband were longtime members and volunteers with the Oak Ridge Playhouse, where she served on the Board. Gardening was another passion and she designed and planted her own landscape incorporating native plants and wildflowers. She was a member and past President of the Arrisa Garden Club and remained an active member of the West Ridge Family and Community Education Club. She had many other interests & hobbies including membership in several Oak Ridge bridge clubs, crafting and sewing, cooking, and decorating.
Bob and Reba loved to camp and travel, taking their family all over the US in a station wagon and camper. In retirement they took every opportunity to visit and travel with their children, and in addition, to much of the US, traveled to Europe and Asia.
She will be especially remembered as a warm and generous mother and grandmother. She was happiest when the house was full of the chaos of the kids, grandkids and their dogs and it was the hub of many family get togethers and celebrations through the years.
In addition to her husband, Bob, she is survived by her four children; Nancy Holmberg Harrison of Oak Ridge; Doug (Mary) Holmberg of Prospect, KY; Connie (Nathan) Fagre of Middleton, WI; and Eric (Jenny Hutton) Holmberg of Bluffton, SC. She will be greatly missed by her ten grandchildren; Andrew (Julia) Kirk of Knoxville; Emily and Claire Holmberg; Mats, Christian, Alex and Ben Fagre; and Isabella, Henry and Clay Holmberg; and two great granddaughters, Kathryn and Audrey Kirk.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 24 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm at Weatherford Mortuary in Oak Ridge with a memorial service to follow at 6:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Oak Ridge Playhouse, P.O. Box 5705, Oak Ridge, TN 37831-5705, http://www.orplayhouse.com/donate. An on-line guest book can be signed at
