Azilee Pate Lawhorn, 82 of Oak Ridge, passed away Saturday, November 27th. A faithful Christian servant, Azilee was a member of Central Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. She served many roles in the church, most recently as a member of the Celebration Choir, Senior Adult Choir, Handbell Ensemble, and Senior Adult Social Travel Club. Azilee also served as Director of the Adult 5 Sunday School Department.

For several years she also served as a devoted volunteer at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

A loving and caring mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Azilee delighted in following and encouraging the varied interests of every family member.

A native of LaFollette, TN, she earned her Bachelor of Science Degree at Carson-Newman College and her Masters of Science Degree at the University of Tennessee. Azilee began her teaching career at Sunbright High School and retired from the Roane County School System.

In addition to her church, family, community, and career interests, she was a devoted fan of the Tennessee Vols and Lady Vols, attending these athletic events for many years.

She was preceded in death by Loren, her husband of 54 years; and parents, John W. Pate, Sr. and Katie Shoun Pate.
She is survived by four children:
Ed (Karen) Lawhorn of Blacksburg, VA;
Donald (Carolyn) Lawhorn of Lenoir City;
Susan (Mickey)Willoughby of Knoxville; and John (Eva) Lawhorn of Knoxville; Twelve surviving grandchildren are Andy (Liz) Lawhorn of Philadelphia, PA; Trent (Melissa) Lawhorn of Charleston, SC; Joe (Rachelle) Lawhorn of Birmingham, AL; Amanda (Jose) Serrentino of Laredo, TX; Tommy Lawhorn of Knoxville; Elaine (Pat) Hourigan of Lemoore, CA; Amy (Tommy) Bowman of Florence, KY; Mark Willoughby of Knoxville; Dale Lawhorn of Knoxville; Wade Lawhorn of Knoxville; Blake Lawhorn of Knoxville; and Kane Lawhorn of Knoxville; three surviving great-grandchildren are Sarah Beth Hourigan, Jack Lawhorn Bowman, and Caroline Opal Bowman; a surviving sister is Edna Jean (David) Binkley of Knoxville, along with several nieces and nephews.


The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 30th at Central Baptist Church from 5 – 7 PM. The funeral service will follow at 7 PM with Rev. Glenn Ellis officiating. The graveside service will be Wednesday, 1 PM at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family requests that memorials be in the form of donations to Central Baptist Church Celebration Choir or Senior Choir, 130 Providence Rd., Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
