Billy Simmons, 64,”Bill Bill” as he was affectionately known by his grandchildren, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee passed away Thursday, February 4, 2010 at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville, TN. He was born March 20, 1945 in Brooklet, GA, to the late Nathan Simmons, Sr. and Jannie Lee Simmons.
He was a graduate of Tompkins High School class of 1963 and obtained a Bachelor Degree in Electrical Engineering from Savannah State University.
Mr. Simmons began his career in 1968, with the former Union Carbide / Martin Marietta as an Electronic Instructor. During his employment, he also held the positions as, Senior Engineer Technician and Electrical Engineer while employed there until November 4, 1998 after 30 years of service and retiring from Bethel Jacobs. After his retirement he worked at Parsons 8 years at the Y-12 plant as a subcontractor for MS Technology where he continued his employment until Jan 29, 2010. His passion was fishing and his beloved pet terriers, Alfa and Balls Simmons.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brother, James “Budda” Simmons and son, Harry Brock, Jr. He is survived by his wife of 29 years, Mary Lois “Jimmie” Gaines-Simmons; Children: Keith Simmons, Chaunda (Ammon) Crawford both of Savannah, GA, Devon Simmons of Knoxville, TN., Diana (Steve) Wiley, LaVaughn Brock of Oak Ridge, TN and Marsha (Darryl) Johnson of Pooler, GA. One Brother, Nathan (Rosa) Simmons Jr. One sister, Dr. Joan (Frank) Maynor, God Sister, Barbara Green all of Savannah, GA; God Son: Floyd Wade of Oak Ridge, TN. Sisters-in-Law Sallie Collier, Willene Griffin, Carolyn Phillips, Brothers-in-Law Eugene (Karen) Vance (Frieda) Gordon all of Harriman, TN and Tony (Judy) Gordon of Virginia Beach VA. 20 Grandchildren; 10 Great Grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends too numerous to name.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 from 12:00 – 1:00pm at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will be at 1:00pm. Burial will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. An on-line guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com
