Margaret Pauline McGuffin Cavin, 88, a resident of Morning Pointe Assisted Living in Clinton and formerly of Oak Ridge, died Monday, July 21, 2008 at the Methodist Medical Center. She was born October 22, 1919 in Harriman, TN, the daughter of Charles Edgar McGuffin and Margaretha Helfenberger McGuffin. Mrs. Cavin was Valedictorian of the Harriman High School Class of 1937 and graduated from Carson Newman College with a degree in teaching. She played varsity basketball at Harriman High School and lettered in sports at Carson Newman. Mrs. Cavin taught in the Harriman School System and later worked at K-25. She was a long-time member of Robertsville Baptist Church and served the church in many capacities including teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, working in the Clothes Closet and active with the Women's Missionary Union. She also enjoyed gardening, camping, bowling and bird watching. Mrs. Cavin was an avid fan of the UT Vols and the Atlanta Braves. The beauty of Mrs. Cavin's faithfully tended flower beds spoke to the beauty of her life. She loved her family with gentle strength. With faith and kindness, she raised a family of strong capable people who share her joy for life and liveliness. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husbands, J. B. Bullins in 1948 and Arnie Rex Cavin in 2000; Sons, Charles Franklin Bullins and Paul Dale Cavin; Sister, Wilda Bebee and Brother, Charles McGuffin. She is survived by: Daughters, Patsy Jane Smith and husband Richard of Oak Ridge, Joyce Lynn Deering and husband Bruce of Leawood, Kansas, Mary Catherine Long and husband Derrell of Oak Ridge, Sara Margaret Kratz and husband Bart of Chicago, IL and Carol Ann Knicely and husband Steve of Knoxville; Brother, Robert McGuffin and wife Zella Mae of Kingston; Sister, Mildred Taylor of Oak Ridge; Daughter-in-law, Margaret Cavin of Atlanta, GA; 13 Grandchildren, Wendy Deering-Poynter, David Deering, Steve Smith, Paula Smith, Glen Smith, Christi Noe, Catherine Agee, Daniel Long, Nikki Long, Nicholas Knicely, Kelly Boler, Tommy Cavin and Paul Cavin; 16 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great Great Grandson. Funeral services are Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at Weatherford Mortuary at 8:00pm with Rev. Thom Tapp and Rev. Wendy Deering-Poynter officiating. Graveside services are Thursday, 10am at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 – 8pm at Weatherford Mortuary.
