Alice Willard Lyman, 98, died on March 14, 2005 at the NHC Health Care facility in Oak Ridge, TN. She was born in Montevallo, Alabama, December 16, 1906. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Pauline Acker Lyman; a brother, Paul Lyman and a sister, Mary Lyman Perry. She is survived by five nieces, Mary Alice Brown of Wilmington, DE, Nancy Abernathy of Columbia, SC, Polly Brabham of Longview, TX, Jean Lumpkin of Tuscaloosa, AL and Paul Fahnestock of Raleigh, NC. Miss Lyman received a B. A. in Music from Alabama College for Women (now Montevallo University) in 1929, a Certificate of Excellence in violin from Julliard School of Music, New York City in 1932 and a M. A. in music education from Teachers College, Columbia University, New York City in 1942. She was a professional musician in New York City with the Women’s Symphony as well as traveling accompanist with a group in legitimate vaudeville (Lowe’s Theater) and the personal accompanist for solo performance by Natalie Bodanya of the Metropolitan Opera Company. In addition to this busy schedule, she was organist at a church. Her work in public school music began with the schools in Floral Park, Long Island. Miss Lyman was one of the very early pioneers in Oak Ridge arriving in August 1944, moving into one of the women’s dormitories, Carlisle Hall, with several other teachers and eventually moving to her long-time residence at 91 Georgia Avenue. Her teaching career in Oak Ridge Schools started at Elm Grove, which then was then grades 1-8. She then taught at the original Jefferson Jr., High School (now Robertsville), then at the 'new' Jefferson Jr. High, the old high school on Kentucky Avenue., and lastly at the really new Jefferson Jr., High on Fairbanks Road. Her bands at Jefferson Jr. High never received below a 'Superior' rating in competition. She will be fondly remembered by a legion of former students and a host of devoted friends. Miss Lyman was a member of the United Church Chapel on the Hill and its organist and instrumentalist for over thirty-five years. A memorial service celebrating her life and the interment of her ashes in the United Church Chapel on the Hill memorial garden will be held on Wednesday, March 30, 2005 at 2:00pm.
