Harold DeWillis Cofer, age 85, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, September 11, 2012 at NHC Health Care Center.
He was born May 24, 1927 in Chattanooga, TN, the son of Tincie Murphy Cofer and Paul W. Cofer, Sr.
Mr. Cofer was a member of the 1943 Class of Oak Ridge High School. He was a veteran of WWII, serving as a Seabee with the US. Navy. Mr. Cofer was a long-time member of Highland View Church of Christ. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing at Centennial Golf Course and the Oak Ridge Country Club. In earlier years, he served on the Board of Zoning Appeals and on the Oak Ridge Planning Commission. Mr. Cofer enjoyed sharing his role in the history of the early years at the Y-12 plant.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Harriet Hawkins Cofer; son, Keith E. Cofer and wife Kim of Karns; daughters, Nancy C. Witick and husband Ken and Susan Mullins Scrimsher, all of Oak Ridge and
Faye McCullough and husband Tom of Chattanooga; brothers, Paul W. Cofer, Jr. of Knoxville and
Marvin A. Cofer of Eden Prairie, Minnesota; 9 Grandchildren and 11 Great-Grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Thursday, September 13, 2012 from 6 – 8pm at Highland View Church of Christ. The funeral will be Friday at 2:00pm at the church with Curtis McClane and Ray Smith officiating.
The interment will follow at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. His grandchildren will serve as pallbearers. Military Honors will be provided by the US Navy Honor Guard. Weatherford Mortuary is handling the arrangements. An on-line guest book can be signed at www.weatherfordmortuary.com.
