Elmer Hurst Lee of Oak Ridge passed away on July 24, 2010 at the home of his daughter, Beth Palmer and husband, Greg.
He was born June 25, 1931 in High Splint, Kentucky. Elmer moved to the Beech Grove community of Lake City, TN in the mid forties, graduated from Lake City High School in 1949, graduated from Carson Newman College in 1953 with a B.S. Degree in biology.
He served in the U.S. Army, 1953 -1955, in the 13th Infantry Regiment of the 8th Infantry Division with overseas assignment in Germany.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Oak Ridge. Mr. Lee retired in August 1993 from Oak Ridge National Laboratory after 38 years of service in the Metals and Ceramics Division which during earlier years of ORNL, was Metallurgy Division. After several years of consulting at ORNL, he traveled to Japan in 1996 to accept an award for an ORNL patent which he helped to develop. At his retirement in 1993, he was honored for his work record of 34 successive years without missing a work day.
Throughout the years his interests and hobbies included boating and skiing, fishing, deer hunting, collecting antique art glass, gardening, photography, dancing with his wife and daughter, spending time with his beloved dog, Madonna, and when health allowed, attending his grandchildren’s activities.
Preceded in death by wife, Virginia Neal Lee in 2005; son, Anthony Randall Lee in 1982; parents, Rev. William Hurst Lee and Lillie Lee; and, sister, Wilma Lee O’Bannon.
His survivors include: daughter, Beth Lee Palmer ( Greg)Oak Ridge; son, D. Scott Lee (Jill), Oak Ridge; brother, William H. Lee (Barbara), Oak Ridge; sister, Thelma Lee Pace, Dizney, KY; five grandchildren, Peyton, Preston, Parker, and Pryce Palmer, Oak Ridge; Tanner Lee, Knoxville; local nephews, Kent Lee, Oak Ridge; and Clark Lee, Knoxville; as well as out of town nieces and nephews in Kentucky, Ohio, and North Carolina.
The funeral service will be held Tuesday, 8 PM in the chapel of Weatherford Mortuary with the Rev. Stella Roberts officiating. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, 11 AM at Oak Ridge Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be William Lee, Scott Lee, Greg Palmer, Clark Lee, Kent Lee, Bob Lyon, and Darrell Weisgerber. Honorary pallbearers are Harry Conner and Marvin Dunseith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Girl’s and Boy’s Club of Oak Ridge, 102 S. Jefferson Cr., Oak Ridge, TN 37830 and the Oak Ridge Humane Society, 969 Oak Ridge Turnpike, PMB 366, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
