Junious Marion Turley, retired engineer from Y-12, and beloved old-time fiddler, passed away on March 9th, 2010 at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee after a brief illness.

Mr. Turley, known as Jim, was born October 2nd, 1923, and was from Ridgeview of Boone County, West Virginia. He was the son of Matthew Roy Turley and Ruby Audrey Turley (nee Ross).

He was a full-time mechanical engineer for most of his life and had a profound love of old-time fiddling, gardening, land, wildlife and had a deep respect for the old ways. It's notable that Jim's love of songbirds came from his grandfather, Marion Turley, who advised Jim to listen to bird songs when his grandson was learning the fiddle. Jim is well known in the community of old-time fiddlers for introducing many to traditional music and had performed at the Jubilee Festival in Knoxville for 40 consecutive years. He recorded many hours of music from traditional fiddlers which will be preserved in the archives of the Tennessee Folklore Society.

In his youth Jim was active in several fields besides music and participated in theatre, track and field, football, and boxing. He played football at Sherman High School and later at West Virginia Tech, while working as a co-op coal miner before joining the Navy in World War II in 1944. Jim served as an Ensign in the Signal Corp on the U.S.S. Oklahoma City in the Pacific theatre during the naval battles around the Marianna Islands, and participated in the occupation force of Japan, at Sasebo Bay on December 1st, 1945, and witnessed the aftermath of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and took photographs that are archived in the Atomic Energy Museum. He continued as a Naval Reserve officer as a Lieutenant J.G. until June 12th, 1972. After the war he earned his mechanical engineering degree from Oklahoma A&M and was a member of the Beta Kappa Chi fraternity. After graduating, he initially worked for DuPont Chemical in Wilmington, DE, and then in 1952, accepted an engineering position in the Beta-4 forming division atY-12, Oak Ridge, and worked there for a total of 54 years until his retirement in 2006. Jim was also active in amateur radio with his sons at the Oak Ridge ARC, and was licensed under the callsign W4ZWU. Jim was an avid UT sports fan, and followed UT football since the General Neyland era.

He was preceded in death by his parents Roy and Audrey Turley of Ridgeview, West Virginia.

Jim and Helen Turley celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on June 8, 2009. Helen survives him. Also surviving are sons Timothy and wife Ayse of Palo Alto, California, Dean of Knoxville, George and wife Tuti of El Salvador, Jon of Clinton and Jon's son Drake.

Jim was a loving, charitable, gentle and honorable man, and his family and friends sorely miss him.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 5 – 8pm at First Presbyterian Church, 1051 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.
